Earlier this month I posted my 24th Birthday Celebrations video on my YouTube channel, which you can check out here or by scrolling down to the end of the blog post. I was lucky enough to enjoy a variety of fabulous restaurants during the celebrations. So much so that I wanted to write an individual blog post ‘reviewing’ each of these places by telling you a bit more about the food, service and its overall look and feel.
Location: Bryanston, Sandton
Cuisines: Contemporary, Italian
Type: Casual Dining
Food & Drink:
We skipped the starters because as you can see they offer quite large portions, but with a luxurious fine dining twist with regards to its presentation and technique. In fact, the portions were so large that Amy and I had the leftovers from our main meal and dessert for breakfast the next day. At first I was unsure about mixing chicken and prawns with pasta (I like all three ingredients separately) I just didn’t know about mixing them together, but it was DELICIOUS. I had the Nutella cheesecake for dessert and it was absolutely as sinfully divine as it looks and sounds.
Vodka or wine (and in some cases both) are my drinks of choice, so Amy suggested we share the Ketel one vodka Kettle. This drink is served in the cutest little rustic kettle and contains vodka, pineapple and locally brewed ginger beer. Normally I don’t indulge in carbonated drinks, purely because I don’t like its consistency, but for this drink, I was glad I made an exception.
The service was excellent. Our waiter was very friendly, attentive and knowledgeable about what’s on the menu and what drink to pair it with. I really struggled deciding what to order so I told our waiter what I was in the mood for and he recommended the perfect dish!
It is worth noting that Gemelli’s is very popular and it would be in your best interest to make a reservation at least a week in advance. We were quite lucky to get a table without a reservation, however we only arrived at the restaurant after 8pm. A lovely lady we met there said the trick with Gemelli’s is to come after 8pm, if you don’t have a reservation and hope for the best.
Look & Feel:
The look and feel of a restaurant is extremely important to me. Personally it may even be as or even more important than the food. When I get all dolled up and venture outside of my home, where I can have some perfectly delicious food, I want something extra. I want an atmosphere and vibe that my house doesn’t have. I want to feel like I’m out on the town and that anything could happen as long as I’m down to have a damn good time!
Gemelli’s has a stunning modern/ contemporary interior with numerous different seating areas and a beautiful bar. If you have time to take a walk around the restaurant, I highly recommend that you do. They have some absolutely breathtaking murals and pieces of art decorating their walls. Unfortunately I don’t have any photos of the interior but there are some stunning ones on their Zomato page, which you can view here.
I don’t necessarily have a problem with kids in restaurants, in fact I myself used to be a kid in a restaurant until puberty hit. During and after which I was a moody teenager in restaurants. I just prefer to dine at places that are more adult oriented and sans a playing area. Yes, I am unfortunately one of those people. Please put your pitchforks down, we’re all entitled to our own opinions. Luckily at Gemelli’s there were no kids running around screaming, only adults of various ages, having a good time.
It has a relaxed and chilled, yet very much upper-class Joburg type of vibe. The type of restaurant is described on Zomato as casual dining, yet the sounds of luxurious sports cars’ engines and clicks on the floor originating from the likes of shoes by Giuseppe Zanotti and other designers were as much a part of the background music as the excited chatter and popping of champagne bottles. Let’s face it, Bryanston does casual differently, and I absolutely loved every single minute of it!
