You’ve just heard the news that your best friend is pregnant and it’s the best news ever, but some part of you fears that the friendship as you know it may be over. Nine months later the glorious day, that an angel graces the world with her presence, finally arrives and your joy and excitement is only overshadowed by your aforementioned fear. And thus the first out of five things happen…
2).You go from being completely unimpressed and annoyed by people who harp on about their kids to the girl ripping out her iPhone, like a martial arts weapon, to show off your bestie’s baby. You become some sort of baby paparazzi trying to capture every little precious moment. This in turn makes you wonder just exactly how bad you’ll be when you have kids of your own one day…
3). Be prepared to be thoroughly impressed by your best friend’s epic mothering skills. The feminine phenomenon of multi-tasking takes on a new level during motherhood. She can now breastfeed while watching Pretty Little Liars, which I think is absolutely incredible. I mean whenever Caleb is on my screen the only thing that seems to be functioning properly are my hormones.
That being said, I am so sick and tired of the media constantly perpetuating this negative image of marriage and especially motherhood. Yes, it changes your life, yes it takes work, yes it tests you sometimes, but I can’t think of anything more worthy of your time and energy. Professional athletes dedicate their every waking breath to winning a medal at the Olympics and are praised and admired as a result. I don’t understand why a woman whose entire body, mind and soul is dedicated to creating life isn’t given the same respect and admiration.
4). Brace yourself. You’ve never had your heart stolen so quickly before. Not when Noah built Ally her dream house in the Notebook, not when Edward wrote Bella her own lullaby, not even when you first saw Harry Styles grin. That’s childplay (pun intended). Every time she looks at you with those big blue eyes or grasps one of your fingers while drinking her bottle or when she holds onto you as tightly as her little body will allow while pushing her little head into your neck, as if she can’t get close enough to you. You’ll realize that you’ve never loved a little person so unconditionally in your entire life.
5). If your friend is worth her salt expect your bond and friendship to become ever stronger. You get to experience one of the most magical (and turbulent) times of her life by her side. When she asks you to help babysit, consider it an honor. When she has a breakdown (dependant on your cycle) you can have a nice cry with her or be supportive by simply listening and feeding her chocolate on demand.
After all, the best things in life are
